DIY TO DIE FOR: Director's Chair
I LOVE a good DIY. More importantly, I really enjoy upcycling thrifted DIY pieces. Some time ago, a thrifted a unique director's chair at my local thrift store. These chairs are often hard to come by, and expensive. This bargain, however was snagged at the incredible price of $12. Just 12!Needless to say, it needed a little work. The seat was dusty and (it appeared) slightly stained. The wood was old and unfinished in some areas, and it looked tired. But after getting a closer look, having a test sit and examining the overall piece, I could see it had potential. So I purchased it, and happily packed it into the back of my car until further notice. I stopped by Walmart, and picked up some:-sandpaper-black paint (with gloss and primer)-small paintbrushes-washcloth-plastic coverings (to prevent staining the carpet)-bleach (to help remove stains in the seat and back)First, I removed the cloth seat and back to be washed, and I cleaned the chair with very mild soap, warm water, and the washcloth. I allowed it to dry thoroughly.Second, I sanded down any uneven edges or areas of the wood where blemishes were seen. I then wiped it down once more with the washcloth.Third, I poured my paint, rinsed my brushes, laid down my plastic, and went to work! I applied two coats of the paint to all wooden areas, allowing the paint to dry in between coats. Finally, I allowed the paint to dry 24 hours (just to be safe),completed the washing and drying of the seat and back, reconnected them to the wood structure, and boom! The finished product can be seen below!
This director's chair adds a great deal of character to my home office, and is definitely a conversation piece!
Honestly, I am quite pleased with the way it turned out, despite its humble beginnings. What about you? What have you thrifted and upcycled? Let me know! You can also apply the same aforementioned methods to your favorite wood piece to achieve a fresh modern look. Happy Monday and enjoy DIY-ing!-AB
