When In Doubt
Life can be a very stressful place. Working to make ends meet, trying to stay healthy, eat right, make time for family, work out, hang out with friends, run a business, and give back to the community/church are just a few of the things we all juggle every day.One thing is for sure...life doesn't take a break, and like they say, time waits for no one.But if that's the case then how do we keep our heads above water when we feel like we can't swim?
In the recent news we've seen two relatively young celebrities pass away from suicide, and most likely all know at least one person who suffers from depression. These experiences are jolting and always re-institute the idea that life is precious and fragile. But how do we maintain this outlook? What happens when we ourselves experience doubt, disappointment, failure or even depression? Here are just a few things I attempt to do when feeling this way that have been helping me stay sane:When in doubt, I:1. Pray. Whether you're a long time or a short time Christian, Muslim or other faith, engaging in a faith-based organization has been clinically recognized as a consistent spirit-lifter. Finding a good Bible-based community to be a part of is life-changing.
2. Write down 5 things I'm thankful for/happy about. When you train your mind to see the bright in life over time your doubts have very little room to grow.3. Engage in something I love. I love spending time with my hubby, and I love traveling. When I have a hard day, I know spending time in either of these happy spaces will help me recharge.
4. Take care of myself. This is often my weakest area, but I'm learning that one or two pamper sessions won't break the bank. Money saved and futures planned will do you no good if you're not alive or present to enjoy it. So all things in moderation!
5. Get professional help. The hardest to pursue and the area requiring the most commitment, this is the pinnacle of mental health longevity. You don't have to have had an incredibly traumatic experience to warrant counseling. Just as you wouldn't (or shouldn't) go a year or more without getting your teeth cleaned, so it is with your mind. Maintaining a healthy state of being requires just that...maintenance.
No matter where you are, or who you are, I hope when you are in doubt you know that you are valued. I value you and most of all, God values you. Stay positive and have a lovely Friday!-AB
