Mind Over Matter
Earlier this week I was having a conversation with someone about the power of the mind.
In this gentleman's estimation, if he believed it in his mind, so it was. It really was that simple.
To the extent that he wouldn't even consider the idea of entertaining anything negative, even regarding his own health because it would be incriminating for his positive thinking process.
Now to some extent, I think this might prove unrealistic, simply because there are parts of the world outside of our control--that our minds don't have control over.
But how often have we doubted ourselves, or our ability to do something or accomplish something important to us because we've "thought" ourselves all the way out of our ability to do it?
I definitely have.
Negative thoughts, self-talk, and the constant comparison platforms called social media consistently filter most of our views of ourselves, and our accomplishments, no matter how monumental.

How can we function in such a space?
Too often we don't.
We create lists of potential shortcomings that technically don't make any sense to make ourselves feel better about under-achieving.
Things like, "You're not a blogger. You don't blog on a consistent schedule. You're not a model. You're not a workout-guru...why you taking workout pics?....
"And what if no one ever reads your blogs? Who cares about what you have to say anyway?"

All of these things silently increase stress, and therefore cortisol levels in the body. In Psychology Today, the author notes that "Chronic stress and elevated cortisol levels [...] increase risk for depression, mental illness, and lower life expectancy.
So not only are we affecting our ability to address the topic at hand, but all other things as well.
So what's a girl to do? It's unrealistic to believe that a negative thought will never enter our minds. But what I have realized that it becomes easier and easier to practice replacing those negative thoughts with positive affirmations.
For me, some of my current favorites are "I can do ALL things through Christ who strengthens me," and "You are capable, you are intelligent, and you are beautiful."
Consistently replacing my negative thoughts with positive ones can really change the trajectory of my entire day, and I've had some pretty chaotic days recently!
What helps keep you grounded?
Lastly, I attend a mindfulness segment every week at work, where we spend about 30 minutes talking about being present, thankful, and de-stressing in the middle of the work day. This is also a great idea to try at home, even if it means locking yourself in the bathroom for just a few minutes to take some "calm time."
I'm looking forward to this mindfulness class today, and I hope you also find ways to elevate your mind over matter, and de-stress. If nothing else, always remember to look up when you leave a building. It keeps life in perspective, allows you to enjoy nature, and reminds you there is always more than meets the immediate eye.
Have a wonderful Tuesday, friends.
